TPE requires extensive pre-negotiation, deep trust built over time, and crystal-clear agreement on which areas of life are included in the exchange. Even in TPE, consent is always revocable in principle, though the relational cost of exercising that revocation may be high. Healthy TPE relationships include safety mechanisms such as mandatory check-ins, third-party confidants, and agreed-upon circumstances that trigger automatic pause of the dynamic. TPE is a minority practice within BDSM and is not a stepping stone or endpoint for every D/s relationship; most D/s partners never pursue it.
