I'm in a long-term D/s marriage and my Dom has recently been diagnosed with depression. How do we handle the dynamic while he's in treatment?

Depression commonly reduces energy, motivation, decision-making capacity, and emotional availability, all of which are central to the Dominant role in a D/s dynamic. Expecting your husband to maintain his Dom function while managing significant depression is not realistic, and attempting to force the dynamic to continue unchanged is likely to produce resentment, inadequacy, and harm to both of you.

Most D/s couples in this situation describe taking a formal pause of the dynamic structure. This means explicitly agreeing that the D/s protocols and expectations are suspended for a defined period, and that both people are operating in a more equal partnership mode until he has the capacity to return to the role. This is not a collapse of the dynamic; it is an adaptation that a genuine long-term relationship requires.

The conversation about this pause is worth having clearly rather than letting the dynamic fade ambiguously. Ambiguity tends to create anxiety in both people: he may feel he is failing; you may feel you are losing the relationship. A clear agreement that the dynamic is on hold by mutual decision removes those anxieties.

Meanwhile, attending to his treatment, supporting his recovery practically, and looking after your own emotional needs through the period are all important. You may find you need your own support, whether from friends, community, or a therapist, during a period when your usual dynamic and its comforts are not available.
