QDear Sak.red,

I'm 22 and interested in primal play. I've tried to explain it to potential partners and they all think it's weird. How do I find people who are into primal?

ASak.red answers:

Primal play has an active and growing community, particularly among younger practitioners, and finding partners who share the interest is mostly a matter of knowing where to look. Fetlife groups dedicated to primal, kink events with a primal focus, and honest identification of the interest in your profile are all effective routes.

Primal play, which involves raw instinctive connection, mock fighting, chasing, growling, and unscripted animalistic behaviour rather than formal role protocols, tends to get dismissed by people who are more comfortable with structured kink. The 'weird' reaction you are getting is often from people who have a different relationship to control and script than primal play involves.

The good news is that the primal community is substantial and has grown significantly over the past decade. On Fetlife, searching for primal groups or primal hunter/prey discussions will find you a large number of active practitioners. Most mid-size kink communities have at least some primal-identified members.

Being explicit about the interest in your profile or in early conversations with potential partners is more efficient than trying to introduce it after a connection is established. Saying 'I'm primarily interested in primal play and prey/hunter dynamics' upfront means you are only talking in depth with people who are at least open to it.

Kink events, particularly those that cater to a younger audience, often include spaces or organisers who specifically welcome primal play. Play parties sometimes have designated spaces for more instinctive and physical play that are distinct from more protocol-based areas.

The people who are into primal tend to be quite enthusiastically into it, so once you find your community you are likely to find the connection you are looking for fairly quickly. The difficulty is more in the search than in the scarcity.
